Our sophomore class helped volunteer at Ferguson Park. While we were there we helped pick up trash, shovel, rake, etc. I personally went around picking up trash. We walked a lot while we were there and it was on a really hot day as well. We tried keeping our minds off of the fact we were hot and sweaty and try to focus on that we were doing a good thing. At the end of the day I felt really tired but really good at the same time because I helped people out at the park that day. My favorite part was at the end when we all got water and played on the playground for the rest of the time and then going back to the school.

My group went and volunteered at Terrace Ridge Living Center. When I went to Terrace Ridge, the people there was so sweet and loving. My favorite part was just going around helping and seeing the look on their faces when you did something for the people. Like for example, the first day there, I painted this woman’s nails and she was so happy. I felt better after I volunteered because I working and helping them out. I would recommend others visiting the living center because there are so many people that may not have family and just need someone to talk to.

The half of the class that went to the Lake to put together cankerworm kits. The other have went and did yard work around the lake. The group I was in went to make cankerworm kits when we got there. Our group helped out so much and we made so many of these kits because not very many people work to do this regularly or even on a daily bases, so giving our time to them as much as we can helps them out a lot. While we were there, our group split up into probably four groups and we worked on separate jobs to make the kit. Each group had one job, so when we formed groups, my group marked and cut cotton strips, some people rolled this black looking felt, some people rolled the cotton strips, and others placed everything in the bags. I had a lot of fun doing the kits and even though we had to roll out the cotton, mark it, and cut it, then do it over and over again.

For my last trip, our grade went to the Gaston County Museum and Schiele Museum. I really liked going to the Schiele Museum and the Gaston County Museum too. I’ve been to the Gaston County Museum when I was in the 2nd grade and going back and seeing new things in the museum and learning that the “Parlor” room wasn’t really a parlor it was just a room full of furniture they randomly had was interesting and that they plan on restoring it to how it was before. My favorite thing was knowing that back then it was not good to stay on the top floor because if there was a fire then you would be trapped and you would most likely die because the building was made of dry wood and horse hair so if it caught on fire it would burn instantly. If I could spend more time on this field trip I would because I enjoyed going to these museums and learning new stuff and getting to play in the Schiele Museum after we were down with the planetarium. I would really recommend these two museums because they were both a lot of fun and I would love to go back. https://docs.google.com/a/gaston.k12.nc.us/document/d/1E4U91IYAC43Sr7S6IzkUiRtX9x0ep6Yya5LleB-LTh4/edit?usp=drive_web Our third trip was to Daniel Stowe, downtown Belmont, and Belmont Abbey College. My family grew up in Belmont so I knew a lot about Belmont already on this trip, but there was something I never knew about at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. I learned that they had trails and one trail leads you to a lake that is really pretty and I got to take pretty pictures close up to the sand. My favorite part about the trip was going out to eat then we got to walk around and shop if we wanted to do in a certain amount of time. If I could spend more time on this trip I would because Belmont Abbey College is so pretty and we went on such a nice and cool day to walk around. I would recommend this field trip because I had a really fun time that day and Belmont is older but it is really pretty and full of history. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E4U91IYAC43Sr7S6IzkUiRtX9x0ep6Yya5LleB-LTh4/edit Our second trip we went to was the county jaila dn the courthouse. As I was there, I learned about the courthouse and the jail was that if you are making a disruption in the courtroom the judge can hold you in jail for a little bit. My favorite thing was going in and seeing the people in jail and how we couldn't talk to them or make eye contact because they were going to try and scare us. I thought was neat was when we were touring we saw a guy in a green looking blanket/robe and it was actually the suicide vest they put on prisoners who attempt to kill themselves. If I could spend more time on this trip I would because I didn’t get to see all of the jail and I wish I could have. I would recommend this trip definitely if you are interested in law and court systems because it was a fun experience and I had a good time being there as well.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E4U91IYAC43Sr7S6IzkUiRtX9x0ep6Yya5LleB-LTh4/edit On September 9th, 2016, the 10th grade class went and hoked Crowders Mtn. I had a lot of fun up there. I learned that Crowders Mountain had a museum. My favorite part about the trip was hiking and finally getting up the mountain. It really motivated us when people that were coming down was telling us we could do it and how much more we had left. I would have loved to spend more time up there. I wanted to know more about the types of animals that are up in the mountain area.
I would recommend Crowders Mtn. because it was such a beautiful view when you reach the top. I also recommend going on a breezy day, definitely not a day that is really hot because you will sweat a lot more than you can replenish in your body. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E4U91IYAC43Sr7S6IzkUiRtX9x0ep6Yya5LleB-LTh4/edit For my last community event, my boyfriend and I went to see the Christmas Lights. He has never been and I haven’t been since I was little so I thought we could take him along. We had an amazing time, there was people there that I knew and more people there that I never seen before. I forgot how big the Christmas Lights were. Last year, more than 375 trees which were decorated. Ranging in height from 6 feet to more than 90 feet. There was as few as 500 lights and as many as 5,000 lights used on one single tree. I loved every minute being there and it made me forget whatever I was dealing with back at home and just enjoy my time there, seeing the beautiful lights. Then, afterwards Nick and I went to cracker barrell and ate. I would recommend people going because it is so pretty and you don't want to miss it. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qs1stjwuIs-mF2_dlnpr2uG32WesOBG1cunSp4uwZ9Q/edit Trunk or treat is where people can sign up at places like: church, fire departments, hospitals, etc. and decorate the trunk of their car or truck for halloween and give out candy. It is really fun seeing little kids of all ages come all dressed up asking for candy. Trunk or treating, also known as Halloween tailgating in some places. For churches that celebrate Halloween, trunk or treat has become a safe alternative for parents who wish to keep a watchful eye on children. I’ve done trunk or treat as a kid asking for candy to helping out with trunk or treat. The people that come to trunk or treak can be any religion or race. But since we do have ours at a church, we give out little books about Jesus and our church to get people to come and hear about Jesus Christ. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uF2TErKKGBgBSHCJ4MSe4J7oK55ztU5XAUTcsVSNYCw/edit VBS is short for vacation Bible school. What it is for is to teach kids about Jesus in a fun and active way in the summer. My church does it every summer and I’ve been going to it since I was a little kid. I decided to go this year to help my grandparents out because they cook for VBS every year. VBS lasted about a week and we had over 1,000 kids come at our church for it. We had all kinds of people. Blacks, whites, Latinos, etc. We had kids ages from babies to high schoolers and adults, to seniors coming to VBS. The environment at VBS was very uplifting and fun. It was so cute and precious to see these little kids love worshiping God and singing and dancing. Everyone was so sweet and wonderful and I believe we all had such a blast going. VBS really brought our community in one place. I really enjoyed VBS. Just seeing all these little kids with smiles so big and wide on their faces just melted my heart.
